Overall Condition
Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents, and have been treasured by several owners.   Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use.  We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings.  Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage.

A fine and well used handwoven square mat made out of straws and decorated with embroidered motifs and openwork  patterns. The artisan uses basketry technique to get to such result.    These have served as eating mats also known as placemats  (Izithebe in Zulu). They  were woven from salt marsh rush .

Jannie van Heerden is Deputy Chief Education Specialist in the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education in charge of Visual Arts and Design education in KwaZulu-Natal, and has spent 16 years documenting basket weavers in the field.
