his listing is for a vintage Madelon brand metal plateau style clarinet. Unlike a typical clarinet a 'Plateau' style instrument does not have open tone holes which must be sealed by the player's fingertips. Instead, every tone hole has a corresponding key with a pad. Such an instrument is especially useful for certain individuals, including those with arthritis of the hands, unusually small or large fingers, or any other issue that makes it difficult to properly seal the tone holes.
This is a very rare instrument! Metal clarinets certainly aren't rare, but plateau clarinets are. The combination of the two is exceedingly rare. In 15+ years of buying and selling woodwinds I have only come across a couple others!
This instrument is in excellent physical condition, but it will require a full overhaul to be made playable. The body looks straight, and there are no dents or dings. The barrel tenon and upper body tenon are perfectly round. The barrel looks like it has a built in micro tuner, but I can't get it to turn. I'll leave that for the buyer to figure out. All of the keys are moving freely and rebounding properly when released. As a side note, the right hand stack has multiple adjusting screws for fine adjustments.
The silver plate finish is almost fully intact. It should look great when it is cleaned up and polished! This instrument will of course need all new pads/corks.
This instrument comes in what I presume to be its original case. The case is pretty shabby. The interior fabric is loose, and it is slightly musty. It will add protection for shipping, but you'll probably want something better for once it is restored
There is no mouthpiece, nor any other accessories included.
