Greetings! I offer this antique Bb clarinet by Heinrich Friedrich Meyer of Hannover, Germany.
The firm of Heinrich Friedrich Meyer (1814–1897) flourished in Hannover from 1848 until the early 20th century
. Examples of his clarinets and flutes are in many important collections. This instrument was probably made between 1880 and 1910, at least that's my best guess. It is made of very nice grenadilla wood throughout, with 2 rings and 13 keys, of which one is missing (a friend who is an expert on antique clarinets tells me it is the side Eb key
.) That key seems to have had the posts removed and the tone hole plugged. The key system appears to be the "Système Ordinaire" (Simple System, often referred to as the Müller System, though not completely correctly.) The upper body joint, lower joint, and bell are marked "(Crown stamp) / H.F. MEYER / HANNOVER / B". The barrel is marked "(Crown stamp) / B", and is clearly original.
I don't know the pitch level but I would expect High Pitch of around 454; the overall sounding length from the tip of the mouthpiece to the end of the bell is 676.3mm (26-5/8"
). Length without mouthpiece is 604.8mm (23-13/16"). NOTE that this instrument is NOT a "NACH MEYER" copy, it is a genuine Meyer. The mouthpiece is a later Conn, probably circa WW2 or later.
    CONDITION:
    Cosmetically fair
overall, but it should have an expert restoration to be functional. There are visible cracks in the barrel and the bell socket; I'm not sure how effectively this could be repaired. All the joints come apart. The side Eb key has been removed. One post on the upper joint has pulled out of the wood. There has been some sort of nasty glue or shellac used, possibly to hold the horn together, as the corks are dried out and shrunken. The instrument will need a lot of work to be functional--I'd assume it would have to be a labor of love. The instrument is s
old AS-IS with no warranties. See pictures. WYSIWYG.
