A Pair of Vintage Hand Carved African Gourd for Household Use or Wall Decor

Description

In Africa, gourds are often hollowed out and dried in the sun before being used as household containers. As a matter of prestige, the surface areas are expertly and artfully decorated. I suspect these were carved and then ash from the fire was rubbed into the crevices, creating a rich silvery look on a rust colored background. These two are very striking. They were made roughly 40 years ago, most likely in Kenya, and have been carefully stored ever since.
A leather loop hanger is attached to each. The larger measures 8” at its widest point. The smaller measures 5”.
